Healthy Ireland at your library

Each January, libraries nationwide turn their attention to helping us keep well as part of Healthy Ireland. This government-led initiative is part of the national strategy to improve health and wellbeing, placing a focus on prevention, individual awareness and keeping people healthy for longer.

This year the emphasis is on our wellbeing, on minding our mental as well as our physical health. It’s about being kind to ourselves and providing us with gentle and helpful ways of adding healthy habits to our daily and weekly routines. The national Keep Well campaign launched late last year and reminds us that it’s the small changes that can make a big difference on your body and mind.

Learn with your library

There is no better place to start looking after yourself than at your local library. It’s the place to go to fill your mind, your body and your soul. Healthy Ireland at Your Library provides valuable health information and support to communities and individuals at all life stages. Although we can’t visit our libraries in person right now, they are offering access to a comprehensive range of online resources such as new e-books, e-audiobooks and e-magazines on health and well-being related subjects. Let’s not forget that it’s all free so if you have vowed to save money in 2021 adding a weekly visit to the library, either physically or virtually, to your routine is a good start!

Older people and people who are long-term isolating in Dublin City can have a selection of library books, audiobooks or DVDs delivered to their doorstep. You can find out more details here.

The Healthy Ireland book collection is divided into core subject areas including healthy eating, physical activity, wellbeing and mental health, parenting and positive ageing, with dedicated sections for children and young adults. The BorrowBox online resource can be browsed by category so simply select the Healthy Ireland option to view health and lifestyle themed e-books and e-audiobooks. From January to April 2021, Dublin City Libraries will host an online webinar series with presentations and workshops focusing on positive mental wellbeing, physical health and keeping active, eating well, switching off and being creative.

Our own personal favourite here at Our City Our Books is the Ireland Reads programme. Led by public libraries, and supported by Healthy Ireland, the ‘Ireland Reads’ programme will place a focus on reading for pleasure, escape, mental stimulation and wellbeing. The initiative will encourage everyone to experience the joys of reading - and to share their experience - with family, friends, book clubs, or online. So if you are not a member of the library, now is the time to join or encourage others to do the same. Just that one move will improve your sense of well being hugely.
