Reading has become a lifeline to many during this time and staying connected to each other, to our city and to our books is more important than ever.

March: What's Another Year?

March 2020 will be forever written in our memories for the wrong reasons - we had the first confirmed cases of COVID 19 here in Ireland, leading to a national lockdown. It was also meant to be an exciting time for Our City Our Books, with a planned launch that would see us connect with readers in libraries, bookshops and cafés all over the city.

Alas, the change in circumstances meant that we had to go back to the drawing board, reimagine the project and come up with new ways to keep the conversations going. Connections were made by phone first, before people interested in the project were helped to become more comfortable using Zoom - ourselves included!

Our City Our Books invited people to join us for chats about books and tried to overcome our readers’ block by reading poems and discussing the books we love. Those chats evolved into our online book club and, with the first title selected for discussion being the One Dublin One Book 2020 choice, Tatty by Christine Dwyer Hickey. We now meet regularly on the last Tuesday and Thursday of each month. In the run up to the national day of reading, as part of Ireland Reads 2021, we held additional book clubs, catering to diverse groups of all ages.

A year on, we have laid down strong roots and connect with you, the people who make the project, the readers who call Dublin home, as well as the librarians, booksellers, writers and publishers who feed our minds and our spirits. Reading has become a lifeline to many during this time and staying connected to each other, to our city and to our books is more important than ever. Watch out for our posters on bus shelters around the city and be sure to encourage your friends, family and neighbours to get involved at www.ourcityourbooks.
